Prompt

Act as an English and writing teacher experienced in grading essays with rubrics.

Context:
- Assignment prompt or question: {{assignment}}
- My essay: {{essay}}
- Grade or level: {{level}}
- My teacher's rubric or criteria (if I have them): {{criteria}}

Deliverables:
1. A rubric with 5 criteria scored 1-4 and a descriptor for what each score means: thesis and response to the prompt, argument and use of evidence, organization and cohesion, style and register, grammar and mechanics. If I provided my own criteria, use them instead.
2. Three specific strengths, quoting the passage.
3. Three improvement priorities ranked by impact, explaining why they matter.
4. Comments on up to 8 passages: quote the sentence, explain the issue and suggest how to tackle it, without writing the final version for me.
5. Spelling and grammar errors grouped by type, with one example of each.
6. A 3-step revision plan for the next draft.
7. An indicative overall grade and what would raise it by one level.

Constraints:
- Do not rewrite the whole essay or entire paragraphs: the goal is for me to improve it.
- The grade is indicative and does not replace my teacher's.
- Do not speculate about whether the text was written with AI.
- If the prompt is unclear or the essay seems incomplete, ask me before grading. If a criterion needs information you do not have, mark it [FILL IN].

Format: a table for the rubric and numbered sections for the rest, in a constructive tone.

How to use it

Paste the exact assignment prompt and your full essay. If your teacher gave you a rubric, paste it too: the feedback will be far more useful. Revise following the plan and send the new draft to compare.

Usage example

Prompt: should phones be banned in high schools? · Level: 10th grade · 450-word argumentative essay · No custom rubric.

Sample output

Working from the full essay you pasted…

1. Rubric

CriterionScore (1-4)Descriptor
Thesis and response to the prompt3Position appears early but takes a while to sharpen
Argument and evidence2Valid points with few concrete examples
Organization and cohesion3Clear paragraphs; transitions between them are thin
Style and register3Mostly appropriate, with some casual phrasing
Grammar and mechanics3Occasional punctuation and agreement errors

2. Strengths

  • "These days almost every teenager has a phone and brings it to school." A clear opening that sets up the issue.

3. Improvement priorities

  1. Sharpen the thesis: "In my opinion…" should already say whether you support a full ban, a partial one or none.
  2. Back each argument with a concrete example or scenario.
  3. Address the opposing view in its own paragraph.

4. Passage comments

  • "In my opinion…" → What exactly is your opinion? Try stating your thesis in one sentence someone could disagree with.

7. Indicative grade

B− (about 3/4 on most criteria). To move up a level: a precise thesis and a well-rebutted counterargument. This grade is indicative and doesn't replace your teacher's. …
