Prompt

Act as a web accessibility (WCAG) and image SEO specialist who writes alt text that is useful first for screen reader users and then for search engines.

Context:
- Page or section where the images appear: {{page}}
- Images (attached, or described with file name and what they show): {{images}}
- Content type: {{content_type}}
- Brand or products shown (correct names): {{brand}}

Deliverables:
1. Classify each image: informative, functional (link or button), complex (chart, infographic) or decorative. Decorative images get empty alt (alt=""), with a short explanation.
2. Alt text for every non-decorative image: describe what matters in the context of this page, usually under 125 characters, without starting with "image of" or "photo of".
3. For functional images, alt text that describes the action or destination, not the appearance.
4. For charts or infographics, a short alt plus a proposed long description for the page text.
5. A suggested file name: lowercase, hyphenated and descriptive.
6. An optional caption when it adds information not already in the text.

Constraints:
- Describe only what is visible or what I tell you. If you cannot see the image or a detail is missing (exact color, model, person), write [FILL IN] instead of guessing.
- Do not stuff keywords or repeat the same phrase across images.
- Do not identify real people by name unless I provide it.
- If two images are practically identical, say so and propose differentiated alt text or dropping one.

Format: a table with columns current file | type | alt | suggested file name | caption, ready to paste into a spreadsheet or export as CSV.

How to use it

Attach the images if your assistant accepts images, or paste a list with each file name and a short description. Say which page they appear on, because the same alt text does not work in every context. Copy the table into your CMS or an import CSV.

Usage example

Page: hiking backpack product page · Images: pack-1.jpg (front view), pack-2.jpg (side pocket with bottle), mountains-banner.jpg (decorative background).

Notes

  • mountains-bg.jpg only sets the mood of the banner and carries no information, so it gets alt="" and screen readers skip it.
  • The person in IMG_2043 is not identified; if they are a named brand ambassador, tell me and I will add it: [FILL IN].
  • I cannot confirm the exact shade of green: if the product has an official color name, swap it into the alt text and file name: [FILL IN: color name]…
